Quoting CBC-TV, Saturday, August 26, 2017 Nature of Things documentary with Dr. David Suzuki… we need our sleep to:

  •  Help us discern right from wrong; helping us respond to emotionally engaging moral dilemmas and make good decisions without being submissive and weak to the pressures of society.
  •  Reduce moodiness, irritability, hostility and depression. Research suggesting that a lack of sleep increases negative emotional activity in the amygdala; a region of our brain responsibility for governing emotions. *

  • Ensure a balance of our body weight. University of Colorado studies showed that sleep deprived students snacked more and gained weight because the hormones ghrelin and leptin were affected and they regulate hunger.
